Introduction to the Transportation Program

Transportation contributes the fast growing share of urban air pollution in China, as the country becomes the world’s largest new-vehicle market and various modes of transport grow rapidly. In metropolises like Beijing, vehicle emissions have become one of the leading sources of air pollutants. But China’s regulation stringency is still lagging behind; emissions from off-road mobile sources have not been effectively controlled; and policy enforcement still has significant space for improvement.

The Overarching Goal:

By 2030, China’s transportation sector peaks its oil use and carbon emissions, and all cities meet the current set of Chinese air quality standards, with a handful of champion cities on their way towards achieving WHO guidelines.

Program Initiatives:

  1. Continuously reduce the fuel consumption and air pollutants emissions, from conventional vehicles and finally achieve the goal of zero emissions through advanced vehicle technologies;
  2. Establish a clean, efficient and sustainable freight system;
  3. Guide the use of cars, and build a green transportation system including public transportation, bicycling and walking; and
  4. Explore autonomous driving, ride sharing and big data application, etc., to build a clean transportation in the future.
